چکیده

Variability within a group of animals is an important information which can be used for further optimization of pig fattening. Hence, this project will provide a generic methodology to continuously monitor the differences of growth and body conformation within a group of animals using a set of robust and simple, i.e. low-end image analysis (LEIA) algorithms. The methodology will be breed independent. The verification of the methodology is done under practical conditions with fattening pigs. The project will provide non-dimensional parameters to describe a group’s heterogeneity with regards to changes in time. Time-series analyses will be used for the estimation of the future development of variability within the group.

Modeling the growth of the Goettingen minipig.

The Goettingen minipig developed at the University of Goettingen, Germany, is a special breed for medical research. As a laboratory animal it has to be as small and light as possible to facilitate handling during experiments. For achieving the breeding goal of small body size in the future, the growth pattern of the minipig was studied. This study deals with the analysis of minipig BW by modeli...

Does group size have an impact on welfare indicators in fattening pigs?

Production systems for fattening pigs have been characterized over the last 2 decades by rising farm sizes coupled with increasing group sizes. These developments resulted in a serious public discussion regarding animal welfare and health in these intensive production systems. Even though large farm and group sizes came under severe criticism, it is still unknown whether these factors indeed ne...

Prevalence of Chlamydial Infections in Fattening Pigs and Their Influencing Factors

Chlamydial infections in pigs are associated with respiratory disease, diarrhea, conjunctivitis and other pathologies. The aim of this study was to define the prevalence of Chlamydiaceae in Swiss fattening pigs by applying sensitive and specific detection methods and to correlate prior antibiotic treatment and farm related factors with differences in prevalence. Conjunctival and fecal swabs wer...

Protein and lipid deposition rates in growing pigs following a period of excess fattening

The objective of this experiment was to test the proposition that fatter pigs, when fed a high crude protein (CP) diet, would attempt to correct the effects of excess fattening on body composition by returning to a state that is consistent with pigs grown under non-limiting nutritional conditions. The experiment was divided into two phases: Phase 1 was from 15 to 30 kg in which 72 of the 96 Lar...
